West Lancashire Community High School is committed to providing an inclusive, broad and balanced curriculum which is designed to meet the needs of all our students and equip them with the skills for their life in modern society. It enables students not only to make progress towards their personal learning goals and achieve appropriate accreditation, but also to enjoy learning for its own sake and develop the skills and understanding to live safe, healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.  We are committed to providing a full range of opportunities both within and beyond the school site.  We want to ensure we deliver a student-centred curriculum which continually aims to further our students development throughout their time at our school.  Our curriculum focuses on raising self-esteem, confidence and aspirations alongside developing social interaction skills will also be an important part of the work undertaken in the curriculum.  We are committed to ensuring that our students fully immerse themselves in learning, work within a flexible framework which is responsive to their needs, enable all students to communicate, think and problem solve in a range of contexts.

Through the curriculum at we endeavour:

  • To help our students develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to apply themselves to tasks and physical skills.
  • To develop knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to adult life and independence.
  • To encourage effective use of communication and numeracy.
  • To encourage an understanding of the world in which we live, emphasising the independence of individuals, groups and nations and so contribute to community cohesion.
  • To help students appreciate achievements and aspirations and to realise positive self-image.
  • To develop interaction and participation of the school within its community.

Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our students for lifelong learning.  We will offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all our students.

It is our intention that:

  • The curriculum should be inclusive, broad and balanced.
  • The curriculum should be relevant, linking personal goals and adult aspirations.
  • There should be differentiation and personalisation.  The content of the curriculum needs to be matched to students’ goals, abilities and aptitudes.
  • The curriculum should offer progression and continuity.
  • Students will have good functional skills, be flexible, and are able to work well in teams, solve problems and make decisions.

Our curriculum places students at the centre of our decision making and allows them to make connections in their knowledge, skills and understanding that are vital across all areas.

Our work on promoting social skills, including values, resilience and well-being supports the students to become the very best version of themselves.

We want to develop our students into a happy, emotionally secure adults who can access supported or independent employment and living.

We want them to have the skills to communicate their needs and wants independently and continue to learn in their local environment and wider community.

Fundamentally through our curriculum we want our students to have the skills and confidence to make a positive contribution to the community in which they live and have happy, fulfilling lives.
